What is a microinverter, and why is it best for our customers?
In solar PV systems, inverters convert DC current the panels collect from the sun’s rays into the AC current used in your home. The most common type of inverter is a string inverter. However, microinverters are growing in popularity—and make the greatest sense in New England.
The main drawback of typical string inverter systems
The more commonly used string inverters, on the other hand, work by aggregating the power of multiple solar panels into “strings,” which are then connected to a centralized inverter that converts DC to AC electricity. In this single unit AC-to-DC conversion, one weak link can weaken the entire chain. In the worst case, if one panel goes down, the whole system can go down with it.
Why we choose microconverter systems
Microinverter systems, pioneered by Enphase, work by attaching one microinverter to one individual solar panel, enabling each panel to function autonomously. In this one-to-one system, if debris or shade blocks one panel from sunlight, the other panels still function with 100% efficiency. In other words, a single weak link doesn’t break the chain.
Microinverters deliver superior performance…
And Enphase microinverters stand above the rest.
Given their panel-level operation, microinverters deliver greater redundancy, more flexible system design, and monitoring of individual panels and enhanced safety. Enphase IQ8 Microinverter series delivers top-of-the-line microinverter performance.
Best for New England’s Climate
With the variable climate in Boston and continuously changing levels of sunlight, microinverter systems offer the reliability our customers demand. If one panel slips into the shade or experiences a rare glitch, the other panels keep generating 100% power.
Fast return on investment
Over its lifetime, a microinverter system can harvest 5-20% more energy than a string system, for a faster return on investment.
Enphase is the reliable choice
With the variable climate in Boston and continuously changing levels of sunlight, microinverter systems offer the reliability our customers demand. If one panel slips into the shade or experiences a rare glitch, the other panels keep generating 100% power.
The Enphase IQ8 Series Microinverter delivers more to our customers
Given their panel-level operation, Enphase microinverters offer a number of advantages, including redundancy, more flexible system design, monitoring of individual panels and enhanced safety.
Adaptable to Your Changing Needs
Energy needs can change over time as we adjust our lifestyles, upgrade appliances, and extend our roof space. String inverter systems don’t provide panel-level monitoring, and it’s difficult to make any additions to your array without purchasing a new inverter. Enphase Microinverters allow you to easily add more panels in the future without adding an additional device for stringing them together.
Standout features of the Enphase IQ8 Microinverter system
All-weather certified
All Enphase IQ Microinverters are all-weather with a NEMA 6 rating. A double-insulated, corrosion-resistant polymer housing means it’s rated to even extreme weather events. In severe weather like hurricanes, FEMA recommends microinverter technology for better performance and reliability (FEMA logo).
Better over time
Get over-the-air software updates that bring innovative new features to your solar system and the Enphase App.
Responsive and responsible
Enphase Energy Systems include built-in rapid shutdown so that, should an emergency strike, your solar power can be turned off instantly and easily, keeping utility workers and first-responders safe.
Ready for today and tomorrow
Enphase solar has a plug-and-play design. As your home energy needs grow over the years, an installer can simply plug in more solar panels and microinverters.
A bright idea, even in low light
If shadows or clouds pass overhead, Enphase IQ Microinverters use breakthrough Burst Mode technology to capture more energy in low-light conditions.
